Six Commitments to Our Community
We, the trustees and president of the University of Utah, affirm the role the U plays as the flagship university in our state. This statewide responsibility requires us to deliver excellence in teaching, research, patient care, and community service. It also requires us to collaborate with our sister institutions of higher learning as we help individuals and communities prosper. In our pursuit to become a top ten public university with unsurpassed societal impact, we make six commitments to Utah:
1. COMMITMENT to lead – Founded in 1850, we stand as Utah’s longest-serving, largest, and most prominent institution of higher learning. We represent Utah in the prestigious Association of American Universities and are recognized as a Tier 1 research university. We aim to become a national model of an equitable and inclusive campus where diversity thrives. We improve health and well-being with our top-ranked health system; we compete in the Pac-12 “Conference of Champions”; we contribute to the economy as the state’s largest employer; and we serve as state stewards of outstanding cultural assets. We fly Utah’s flag.
2. COMMITMENT to educate – We extol the promise of education to confer substantial individual and societal benefits and contribute to a better world. We focus on student achievement knowing that our efforts will help increase our students’ lifetime earnings, enhance their social mobility, and help them live happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. We serve as the state’s dental school, law school, medical school, pharmacy school, comprehensive cancer institute, and mental health institute, and confer more than half of the state’s graduate degrees. We inspire lifetime success through learning.
3. COMMITMENT to research – We produce two-thirds of the state’s public university academic research, including pathbreaking studies and critical discoveries that prolong and improve people’s lives. The co-location at the U of a comprehensive research university and an academic medical center makes the U one of fewer than 12 equivalent institutions in the country. We innovate, improve lives, and change the world.
4. COMMITMENT to serve – We embrace a statewide service mission that fosters community success. Our societal impact stretches far and wide, including neighborhood partnerships, volunteer service projects, interdisciplinary service teams, contributions to public policy, health charity care, community centers, arts and cultural experiences, and numerous institutes, centers, and programs that help Utah prosper. We embed ourselves in the social, economic, and cultural fabric of Utah and fulfill our responsibility as a model public university. We impact Utah through service.
5. COMMITMENT to patient care – We provide excellent care for approximately two million patients annually. Staffed by more than 20,000 health care professionals in five hospitals and 12 community health care centers across the state, U of U Health serves as a nationally recognized and transformative health care system and regionally as a provider of world-class care. We train the majority of the region’s physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, and other health care professionals. We care for all Utahns in sickness and in health.
6. COMMITMENT to unify with sister institutions – We seek to be leaders and stewards of a unified statewide approach to educational success. We support the leadership of the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) and collaborate with sister institutions in both higher and public education to serve Utah. This unified approach maximizes the beneficial impact as each school shares its unique educational strengths for the greater good. We partner as we lead, educate, research, and serve.

Last week, the University of Utah President, Taylor Randall, visited our DPT program in St. George. Read what uofupresident had to say in recapping the visit:
“Earlier this week on our #UtahAcrossUtah trip we visited UtahTechU where we have partnered to offer students a Doctor of Physical Therapy uofumedicine uofupt in St. George.
The program is in its second year with about 15 students in each class. Courses are taught both in-person and virtually by faculty alternating between Salt Lake and St. George.
We met with three PT students: Jessica Bills, a St. George native and Utah Tech grad, Brooklyn Cottle, who is a first-year student and works as the A/V manager for her cohort, an important role given the virtual aspects of the program and Kade Brantingham, who is in his second year and class president.
Thank you to Dr. Lee Dibble chair and director of the PT program and his CofHealth UofUHealth colleagues for giving us a tour of the fantastic new facilities at Utah Tech. The anatomy lab was pristine.”
Thanks for the visit and for sharing the incredible things our department does. Come back anytime!
#UofU #UofUPT #UofUDPTOne of the best things about our #UtahAcrossUtah trips is the people we meet along the way.
On this #FlashTheUFriday I want to give a shoutout to Richard Humphrey a senior at Dixie High School dixiehigh, St. George’s oldest high school and my mother’s alma mater.
Richard is a Five Guys fiveguys crew member and was behind the counter when more than 10 members of the U’s leadership / bus team descended — bus trips make you hungry!
Richard was incredibly helpful and patient taking our order.
Talking with Richard, I learned he is considering the U universityofutah and we would love it to see him in Salt Lake next fall. Richard is president of the Dixie High Key Club, runs track and cross-country and is a member of the madrigals. #GoFlyers #GoUtes! What started as a dinner conversation with our SUU colleagues about their high demand aviation programs turned into a highlight of our #UtahAcrossUtah trip.
A tour of their aviation hangar and a helicopter ride!
Thank you to everyone at suutbirds #TBirdNation who helped put together the last minute program tour and to the awesome flight crew team who gave us a fantastic ride!On our #UtahAcrossUtah trip south we stopped at the Milford Wind Corridor which is the state's largest wind facility.
Janet and I got to peek inside one of the 300ft high turbines.
The corridor is also home to our Utah FORGE (Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy) project, sponsored by the Department of Energy energy and has huge potential for energy production.
We also learned that the corridor’s pig farms make more revenue from natural gas production than from making bacon.
Our state is rich in energy production opportunities and our universityofutah researchers are leading the important work to find pathbreaking discoveries to improve people’s lives.
Learn more about the Utah FORGE at the LINK in bio."One of the highlights of the #UtahAcrossUtah tour was meeting w/alumni & hearing ideas for how the U can expand its impact & improve lives. #FlashTheUFriday from earlier this week on our #UtahAcrossUtah statewide tour, a stop at Dead Horse Point State Park in Moab moabcity utah_dnr utstateparks. The majesty of the park is a reminder of everything the stateofutah offers to students to learn about and experience. Imagine being a geology student and learning in a classroom about ancient sediments and igneous activity and then being able to see it in person at Dead Horse Point. That is a transformative student experience. #GoUtah!
Outside of Moab on our #UtahAcrossUtah tour visiting uofuresearch Bonderman research field station at Rio Mesa. We visited with on-site researchers like anthropologist anthropology.uofu Issac Hart who studies native onions’ ability to survive wildfires. The station also conducts an extensive bird census. We learned from uofubiology graduate student Kyle Kittelberger their intricate process from catching, recording and tagging thousands of birds every year. Thank you to station director uofugeography professor Zach Lundeen who showed us around Bonderman and the campground facility along the Dolores river that hosts universityofutah courses, workshops and middle/high school groups from across the state. The Rio Mesa station experience has great value to get more of our students engaged in research day one. #UtahFresh
#SixCommitments #UofUMembers of the Freedom Business Alliance uphold the 6 Commitments of Freedom Business, one of which is a commitment to Good Working Conditions.
Good Working Conditions may seem obvious, but unfortunately millions of workers around the globe are subjected to poor, even abusive, working conditions every single day.
Freedom Businesses call for holistic freedom and care for people first and the 6 Commitments of Freedom Business reflect this call.

More from our #UtahAcrossUtah #SixCommitments tour, here at Finley Resources Inc./Uintah Wax. We are getting a tour of the oil drilling rig and control room which looks straight out of a space craft. Utah’s energy sector employs 76k Utahns and is 6% of our GDP. The industrial wax produced by Finley is used as an important source of lubrication in wind turbines and other carbon neutral infrastructure. The tour is helping me see opportunities for universityofutah innovation and the role we play as a leader in research and education in the state and nation. Thanks to everyone at Finley for the warm welcome and very informative visit.

#UAlumni #UtahAcrossUtah #UofUI’ll admit I was geeking-out at the ENVE Composites envecomposites stop on our #utahacrossutah tour, since my dissertation was on bicycle supply chain structure. ENVE is an Amer Sports brand and one of the US’s premier manufacturers of handmade carbon fiber bicycle rims and components. I want to thank ENVE Managing Director Jeremy Venz and Amer Sports’ Evin Catlett for the outstanding tour of the Ogden facility, from the main showroom to the manufacturing floor to the freezer where the carbon fiber is stored, I was truly impressed. We are going to send more universityofutah students & grads your way to get involved in your business, one that is so quintessentially Utah and global in reach. #6commitments
Did you know that NorthropGrumman employs over 900 utahalumni? As part of our #utahacrossutah tour in Northern Utah we stopped at NG’s Roy, campus to met with some of our amazing alumni, like, Brent Higgs, Wendy Williams, Justin McMurray and recent Materials Science & Engineering utahcoe grad and Society of Women Engineers member SWETalk Takara Petersen. We also learned that NG is growing with nearly 1,000 job openings in Utah. We’d like to thank NG for their hospitality and support of the U’s students. Currently, over two dozen universityofutah students are working as summer interns and NG has provided 19 grants this year and has offered another series of grants to colleges and departments across campus. This is the kind of partnership we need to continue to strengthen and develop. #6commitments
Last stop on our #UtahAcrossUtah trip this week was Dixie High School dixiehigh, St. George’s oldest high school and my mother’s alma mater.
We saw Richard from our stop at fiveguys and talked to the entire senior class.
I was fortunate to have three great universityofutah leaders with me, Andrea Thomas, our Chief Experience Officer, Lori McDonald vpsalorimcdonald, VP of Student Affairs and Mary Ann Villarreal uofuedi, VP of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Together we talked about higher ed opportunities across the State of Utah, what we are doing at the U to build campus town magic, the resources and support for all students and how to find belonging when moving from a smaller to a bigger city.
Most importantly, Mary Ann taught the seniors how to make the U!
It was a great visit, thank you to Principal Brooks for hosting us and all the seniors for their enthusiasm and interest — in particular the student body officers who helped us pass out U swag and sunglasses. Hope to see you in Salt Lake #GoFlyers #GoUtes!
Following our #UtahAcrossUtah tour of Utah Tech UtahTechU, we held a dinner on campus with a great view of Red Cliffs. It is always fun to spend time with our St. George utahalumni.
Dr. Michael Good, SVP of U of U Health Sciences and CEO of uofuhealth provided encouraging updates coming out of U of U Health, specifically in the areas of access, care and discovery. For example, he mentioned the fact that the U Health System now serves an area that covers more than 10% of the continental US with 55 telehealth sites and 22 regional partners. In terms of care, he mentioned the 2.2 million patient visits U of U Health sees annually and the hope that U will be ranked among the nation’s top ten quality providers for the 14th year in a row, a feat only matched by the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Good also discussed the many advances U of U Health research is making in areas of cardio, cancer, mental health, diabetes, rehabilitation, and childhood diseases, with over $450M in research conducted in FY22.
The program was then turned over to Dr. Ben Chan, Director of Rural & Underserved Utah Training Experience or RUUTE ruuteprogram and Associate Dean of Admissions & Idaho Affairs for the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine uofumedicine. Dr. Chan shared his enthusiastic plans for increasing the number of health science students and residents in rural and underserved areas of Utah and discussed the number of unique RUUTE initiatives the program has in place for students at all levels. You can learn more about RUUTE in the LINK in bio.
Dr. Chan conveyed one very clear message, which I agree, southern Utah is an incredible partner to the RUUTE program and medical student success.
We are very grateful for the community for the experience they provide our students, and it is our hope that many of our future physicians will serve the region for generations to come. #Inspire #Innovate #Serve #GoUtah! On a #UtahAcrossUtah stop, for dinner and meeting with friends and colleagues at SUU suutbirds.
Thank you to SUU President Mindy Benson and her team, for hosting us at Chef Alfredo’s in Cedar City and their willingness to find opportunities for our two universities to collaborate.
Also thank you to utahalumni Senator Evan Vickers his wife Chris for their continued support and other local elected officials who joined us for dinner. On our way to southern Utah #UtahAcrossUtah we stopped to have lunch with our friends from brighamyounguniversity, it was good to see byu.president President Reese.
It was also a great opportunity for members of our universityofutah team to meet with their counterparts from BYU to make connections and discuss opportunities for collaboration — but yes, I did overhear a few conversations on next year’s big12conference schedule — dessert at La Jolla Groves lajollagroves was amazing!“I recently embarked on a statewide tour to meet with business owners, public officials, higher education leaders & others to listen to their needs and discuss how we can work together to better serve their communities.
I saw firsthand how our existing affiliations are flourishing—like aerospace internship programs in Weber County and the telehealth services we provide in Beaver County—and we came away with numerous ideas for new collaborations.
One of the highlights of the tour was meeting with our remarkable alumni across the state and hearing your ideas for how our university can expand its impact and improve lives. Our alums are a powerful force in carrying out the U’s mission. Whether you live in Utah or elsewhere in the country or world, your talents and expertise are helping individuals, businesses & communities prosper.
Thank you for the incredible work you’re doing. I’m excited to see the impacts we make together as we continue efforts to improve lives in Utah and beyond.” @uofupresident

Fun fact for the back-to-school crowd, did you know that Utah has an official fossil? As we learned on our #UtahAcrossUtah tour stop at Dinosaur National Monument dinosaurnps near Vernal, Utah's official fossil is the Allosaurus, a large carnivore that lived approximately 145-150 million years ago. It was my first trip to the Dinosaur Quarry and it reminded me both of Utah's historical significance and of the vital educational role the nationalparkservice plays in the state.

On our #UtahAcrossUtah trip to St. George this week we visited Deseret Laboratories, founded by U Alum Mark Gubler and his brother Scott. We even got to dress-up in personal protective gear — which is always fun and fashionable.

The anatomy lab was pristine.
For anyone interested in this innovative program see the LINK in bio for more information.Sometimes magical moments happen when you are traveling across the state on a bus #UtahAcrossUtah.
Leaving the Milford Wind Corridor we drove through town and decided to stop at Milford High School home to utah_football Bryson Barnes bryson_barnes10.
We happened to pull up to the high school at the start of football practice — it couldn’t have been better timed.
Thank you to Coach Thane Russell for letting us disrupt practice and apologies to Colton Barnes for intruding on your ice bath. #GoTigers #GoUtes! It’s been about a year since we traveled across the state on our #UtahAcrossUtah tour. Today we hit the road again for a southern Utah bus trip.
Before heading out of town we visited Teal Drones to learn how our utahalumni are applying their engineering utahcoe education to design and manufacture drones used for a wide variety purposes from defense, wildfire tracking, search and rescue, infrastructure inspection and wildlife management.
On this trip we’ll be meeting with our higher ed partners from brighamyounguniversity suutbirds and utahtechu. I’m looking forward to continuing our discussions on how we can collaborate to deliver the best education in the nation to Utah students.- Retweeted by Thomas Chase HagoodAs Utah’s flagship university, the U has major reach—and major responsibility. Energy is essential to the strength of Utah’s economy, innovation and our well-being. The universityofutah is educating scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers and others that will lead the future of energy. On our #UtahAcrossUtah statewide tour to Carbon and Emery counties this week we visited a solar farm in Wellington developed by rPlus Energies, a Gardner Company gardnercompany subsidiary, and learned about rPlus’ plan to build additional farms in the state. We also had an extraordinary visit with utahalumni, workers and the leadership team of Wolverine Fuels who operate the Sufco mine outside of Salina. We travelled 1800 feet underground to watch how coal is extracted in one of the oldest continuously operating coal mines in the country. I want to thank rPlus Energies and everyone at Wolverine Fuels / Sufco who dedicated their day to educate me and the U’s leadership team about their business and its place in Utah’s energy landscape. #SixCommitments to our community.
Educating a state is an enormous and collaborative task. On our #UtahAcrossUtah tour this week we visited both Utah State Eastern usueastern and Moab usu_moab. We visited facilities and met colleagues who are passionate and working hard to provide educational opportunities to students and communities across the southeastern areas of the state. I want to thank them for welcoming me and the universityofutah team and helping us better understand what they are doing, in order that the U can be the best partner possible, as we all strive to educate and inspire students and provide the workforce skills to keep Utah thriving. This statewide approach to collaboration to achieve educational success is one of our #SixCommitments #GoUtah!
Back on the Utah Across Utah: Six Commitments tour today headed to southeastern Utah with a stop in Helper helperutah. Thank you to Mayor Lenise Peterman who gave us an amazing tour of Main Street. We learned about the vibrant arts community lead by utahalumni and revitalization efforts happening and stopped into Happiness Within happinesswithinhelper for hot chocolate. We also learned that over 27 languages were spoken in Helper at the turn of the century and to commemorate the history they have placed welcome signs in multiple languages into the sidewalk. #UtahAcrossUtah #SixCommitments
